Banking & FX Remittance for Foreigners in China: Salary, Tax Proof & Limits

For working expats, banking is not only “open an account.” The recurring pain point is moving after-tax salary (or savings) out of China with documentation banks and foreign-exchange controls will accept. Clean files usually need: lawful status, a bank account in your name, payroll/tax payment proof, and a story that matches the transfer purpose.

Opening a bank account as a foreigner

  • Typical ask: passport, valid visa or residence permit, local phone number, sometimes work proof or address registration.
  • Work-status reality: longer residence permits and employment evidence make retail onboarding smoother than short tourist stays.
  • Branch variance: the same national bank can accept or reject a file depending on branch experience with foreigners.
  • Mobile pay: linking Alipay/WeChat Pay to a China account or eligible foreign card is a product/compliance stack that changes often — treat vendor help pages as primary for UX, and your bank for binding limits.

Police accommodation registration proof sometimes appears in onboarding packs — see police registration (24h).

Sending salary overseas: documentation themes

Orientation only — banks implement controls differently:

  1. Identity + account in the remitter’s name
  2. Lawful income story — employment income supported by contract/payslips where asked
  3. Tax paid evidence — IIT withholding records / app records / employer tax payment materials commonly requested for larger outward transfers
  4. Purpose and beneficiary consistency — family support, savings, tuition, etc., matching supporting notes
  5. Annual / per-transaction product limits — do not rely on a single blog “$50k” figure without checking your bank’s current channel

IIT framework: Expat IIT hub. Leaving China permanently: departure clearance.

Property sale proceeds (different file)

Selling a China property and remitting sale proceeds is a separate documentation track (tax clearance on the property, title history, co-owner issues). Use the property remittance cluster — start at selling & remitting property proceeds and bank & wires for property sale — rather than mixing it into a salary wire narrative.

FAQ

Common questions

Quick answers for foreign nationals and employers. Rules vary by city and change over time.

Can I open a China bank account on a tourist visa?

Some branches occasionally open limited accounts, but work/residence documentation is the reliable path for full-service payroll and larger remittances. Expect branch discretion.

Do I need a tax clearance certificate every time I send salary home?

Banks often want evidence that tax was paid on the income being remitted. The exact form (withholding records vs other tax documents) depends on amount, bank channel, and year. Confirm with the branch before you promise a wire date to family.

Is there a fixed annual FX quota for every foreigner?

Retail foreign-exchange administration is nuanced. Citizens and non-citizens, account types, and channels differ. Use your bank’s current rules — not a single national number copied from social media.

Can my employer wire my salary abroad directly?

Some multinationals use offshore payroll or dual-contract structures; those are separate legal/tax designs. Onshore RMB payroll usually hits a China account first. Structure questions belong with tax counsel and HR, not only the bank teller.
