Flagship orientation

A legal corridor is not a checklist. It is a sequence of connected decisions.

Get the facts into view early, identify where China-side and New Zealand advice intersect, then take the route that matches the commercial move—not a generic practice-area label.

  • China-parent governance and authority
  • Mainland contracts and onshore implications

Questions at the first call

Practical starting points.

Can a Chinese investor establish or acquire a New Zealand company?

Generally yes, but the structure and transaction may require company registration, overseas-investment screening, competition or sector review, tax, banking, land, workforce, licences, immigration planning, and China-side approvals.

When might overseas-investment consent be required?

Consent or another regulatory pathway may be relevant for sensitive land, significant business assets, fishing quota, strategically important businesses, or other interests covered by the current regime. Screen the transaction early under the post-March 2026 rules.

Does an investor visa approve the business acquisition itself?

No. Immigration approval and the underlying investment or acquisition are separate workstreams. Corporate, Overseas Investment Act, tax, employment, financing, and due-diligence requirements still apply.

What should be checked before importing into New Zealand?

Confirm importer and lodgement registration, classification, valuation, origin, restricted-goods approvals, MPI and biosecurity controls, product requirements, electronic entries, duties, GST, charges, and supporting records.
