Matter routing

Identify the alleged drug offence, substance, quantity, role, and proof separately

A drug case cannot be assessed from the substance name or gross weight alone. Counsel should determine the alleged offence—such as smuggling, trafficking, transport, manufacture, possession, facilitation, premises activity, precursor conduct, cultivation, or unlawful provision of controlled medicines—then test the controlled status and sampling of the substance, each person’s acts and knowledge, jurisdiction, evidence collection, and the quantity or circumstances relevant to charging and sentencing.

Questions that change the route

What substance and conduct are alleged?
Identify the statutory or scheduled substance, mixture and form, suspected source and destination, dates and locations, import or export, sale or transfer, manufacture, transport, storage, possession, prescription or medical context, precursor or equipment, communications, funds, and the offence theory used by investigators.
What was this person’s actual role and state of knowledge?
Separate ownership and control from presence; map instructions, handling, payment, profit, introductions, vehicle or premises use, account or phone attribution, concealment, warnings, coercion, addiction or treatment facts, cooperation, and links to co-suspects or an alleged organized chain.
Can the seizure, identification, and quantity be tested?
Review authority and procedure for search, inspection, detention and interrogation; scene and inventory records; seals and signatures; sampling method; gross and net weight; laboratory identification and purity where relevant; storage, transfer, retesting, contamination, commingling, and complete chain of custody.

Evidence to organize first

  • Search, seizure, inventory, sealing, weighing, sampling, transfer, laboratory, retention, destruction, and chain-of-custody records with photographs and video
  • Device and account attribution, messages, calls, location and travel, payment and bank data, logistics, surveillance, witness and co-suspect statements, and lawful medical or prescription records
  • Person-by-person chronology and role map linking each alleged act, substance, quantity, knowledge fact, financial benefit, aggravating or mitigating circumstance, objection, and requested investigative step

Consultation preparation

What to send before speaking with counsel

A focused first message helps a lawyer assess fit, urgency, conflicts, and likely next steps. Prepare:

  • a short summary of the issue and the outcome you want;
  • a dated timeline, including any filing, hearing, termination, or response deadline;
  • the key contract, notice, correspondence, registration, or decision documents;
  • the names and locations of the parties so the lawyer can check conflicts and jurisdiction; and
  • your preferred working language and whether you need an initial budget or fee estimate.

Do not send originals or unnecessary sensitive data before engagement terms and a secure document channel are confirmed.

Submit an initial enquiry.
